70th Annual Sturgis Rally Part 2 – AMD World Championship
Story and photos by Jack Cofano
For me, the highlight of the Sturgis rally was the numerous custom bike shows held all around the area. The show that brings the most attention and an incredible array of two-wheel art is the AMD World Championship of Bike Building. The show lasts for three days and this year had eighty competitors from all over the world.
I am like a kid in a candy store when I get to photograph these bike shows. It’s like getting a taste of every conceivable treat. Going from one bike to the other I just shake my head at the imagination and engineering each and every time I move on to the next bike. I can’t imagine trying to pick the winner in each class.
This year the title of world champion went to Freddie “Krugger” Bertrand with a café style dual-purpose bike powered by a V-Rod engine. With a flick of a switch the bike can be transformed from a cruiser with a long rake to a fully functional sport bike ready for the twisties. The engineering design of the bike changes the frame’s dynamics from long and low for cruising to short and tall for the sport bike ride. With four years in development this bike is an engineering marvel.
One of the other winners included Sergio Bayarri of Sbay Motor Company in the Production Manufacturer class with another design marvel in line with a Ducati geometry, racer-style bike dubbed Flying. Let me tell you, it looked like it could go airborne at any minute. Another winner, in the Metric World Championship and third place in the freestyle category was Yuri Shif Custom of Belarus with his entry The Machine. Not bad for the first entry ever from Belarus. Many of these bikes are going to Bonneville later this month to see just what they can do. Zoom zoom!
In my book there were no losers at this show. Just being there to be judged by your peers is an honor and win or lose, you know that you’re at the top of your game and can be proud of the effort and creativity that went into your passion.
