Durango is located a few miles northeast of the point where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet. This “point” called Four Corners is the the only place in the United States where four states meet. It is about 6000 fleet above sea level so there’s no worry about a tsunami here.
Invented many years ago by Ignacio homeboy, then U.S. Senator, Ben Nighthorse Campbell, and Durango home boy, Mike Lovato, on the Ute Reservation’s abandoned pari-mutual race track. Ben had helped get the track built with federal money to help the Reservation with jobs. But, all of a sudden, the Utes discovered slots and table games and shitcanned horse racing, as horses eat and slots just steal. Now the events at the fairgrounds are a hit-and-miss event with camping, a beer garden, and music. Note: Ignacio is about 23 miles from Durango over deer infested roads heavily patrolled by State and County Mounties.
The Durango Harley shop had a beer garden, bands, and vendors for the three days while other vendors were down near the center of town in Albertson’s supermarket lot. It was a fun street party both Friday and Saturday nights in downtown Durango. Sunday was the annual parade of historic cars and motorcycles in downtown.
The crown jewels of this event are the mountain roads all around the area. In my opinion, they’re among the world’s best motorcycle roads and far superior than some other claimed motorcycle roads. You can just take a ride over the 10,000-foot passes to Silverton, Ouray, Ridgeway, Telluride, and back to Durango. All in all, that’s about a five-hour ride, not including stops to look, gawk, enjoy the mountain towns, and then trip around the fore-mentioned towns. Ya can’t beat the ride, the views, and the adventure. Warning! Always carry rain gear as a quick passing storm can give you a cold shower.
