2010 Myrtle Beach Spring Rally Part 1 – Cruisin’ the Coast

That’s right, Myrtle Beach ― cancelled, I think not. Smaller in size, absolutely. Less vendors, without a doubt. But, definitely not cancelled. The number of bikes was way down but still more than you would see at ninety-percent of the rest of the rallies around the country.
The majority of the bikes stayed out of the city which is an easy thing to do with the new bypass and bikers, to a person, refused to spend a dime in the city proper. Sure, many stayed away stating, “If we’re not wanted in Myrtle Beach, I’m not going.” Doesn’t sound very biker-like to me. Actually it plays right into the hands of Mayor Rhodes and the Chamber of Commerce, they win, bikers lose. I liked the attitude of sunglass vendor Brad Cobb of Statesville, North Carolina, who has come to the rally for 18 years and plans on coming back. “If I don’t come back then the city of Myrtle Beach won the battle,” Brad said. “But I won’t come back here on vacation with my family. That’s where I can make my statement.” Bravo!
The smaller number of vendors was no surprise, with fewer people, fewer days, higher permit fees, and a struggling economy, it’s hard to make it worthwhile. They make less money, as do hotels, restaurants, and shops. They all suffer. Doesn’t make sense to me in a country just emerging from recession.
On the bright side there are still tens of thousands of die-hard partiers who haven’t caved in to the Myrtle Beach establishment. They still came down to party and there was no lack of venues to get their freak on. Murrells Inlet seemed to be a very hot spot with the original Suck Bang Blow and the Beaver Bar swamped at least from Wednesday on. Barefoot Landing, H-D Spokes, the Harley-Davidson shops, Broken Spoke, and all the rest of the usual bar and venue sites were also well attended. None of these are in the city and you don’t need to wear a helmet if you don’t want to. There were also a number of events around the area such as the World’s Longest Burnout competition at the new Suck Bang Blow, trick riders, lots of music, and, of course, let us not forget the beautiful ladies of the south.
So don’t miss the rally because your feelings are hurt. Go to the rally; enjoy the party, the great restaurants, and the camaraderie. I know I do.
