The traditional Labor Day weekend Four Corners Motorcycle Rally has been happening for almost 20 years in Durango, Colorado, with, in my opinion, a lukewarm reception by the powers that run the town. Durango has massive tourist facilities while the surrounding villages have little or none. Yet other area villages welcome bikers, especially Ignacio, which is located within the boundaries of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. In this economically depressed era with many empty storefronts on Main Ave I could hear Bob Dylan singing The Times They Are a-Changin’. One street was blocked off for a beer garden, BBQ, and bike wash on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday a massive parade stepped off on Main Avenue In my opinion, since most of the eating, drinking, and sleeping joints, as well as vendors, are in Durango the alley might just as well close off Main Avenue for four or blocks for just bikes and vendors. It would be a wise and profitable move. The Ignacio Bike Week Parade was led by Joe, Ben, and Chief. That’s Lt. Gov. Joseph Garcia, former United States Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, and Southern Ute elder and spiritual leader Bennet Thompson. Joe and Ben Campbell, dressed in leather and dark sunglasses, while Bennet was in full headdress. All rode Harleys. [The views and opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Barnett Harley-Davidson or Barnett’s Magazine Online.]
