Biketoberfest 2010 Part 1
Story and photos by Jack Cofano
I just love October ― Halloween, cool weather, low humidity and of course Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, Florida. As anyone who was there can tell you, the weather for this year’s event was phenomenal: sunny, temperatures in the low 80’s during the day and pleasantly cool at night with a soothing breeze coming off the ocean. Absolutely great riding weather.
I stated in my coverage of Sturgis this year that you wouldn’t believe that we were in a recession. Well ditto for Biketoberfest. Attendance estimates put this year’s Biketoberfest right in line with previous years. Many of the vendors stated that although attendance was great, pocketbooks and wallets opened up a little less frequently than normal. That should not be a surprise to anyone.
The hotels and motels in the area were not filled as you would see during the spring rally, but they were doing a good business. Lucky for me that was the case as I went down to Daytona without any reservations, but had plenty of rooms to choose from. I will say that the beachfront hotels were pretty much booked and I could only get one night on the ocean and had to move to another hotel for the other nights. Frankly, that sucked!
Walking down Main Street it was nuts-to-butts on both sides of the street and the bars were packed from Thursday on with entertainment of running the gamut from bands playing everywhere, wet T-shirt contests, dancin’ girls, and a constant flow of bikes parading up and down Main St. Can I get a hell yeah?
I saw some pretty incredible bikes at this year’s rally. I could stand in one spot all day, at any venue, and be in my glory just watching the radical customs, bobbers, baggers, Old School garage builds and a bunch of trikes go by. Of course if I did that my feet would hurt and I would miss the wet T-shirt contests. Ya gotta have your priorities straight.
In Part 1 I am showing about half the photos that I took at the rally, so you will have to wait a few days for the rest in Part 2 and 3. Aw, don’t fret. I know you want instant gratification, but be patient as all good things take time and besides who wants to look at a couple of hundred photos at one time? You’d get clickerfingeritis.
