Underground Bobbers 1972 Carbon Triumph 650
By Mark Barnett, Photos by Reza Gohary and Farzin Yassiny
Making boat, airplane, and car parts by summer and one-off motorcycle parts during the winter, Reza Gohary and Farzin Yassiny of Underground Bobbers in Livermore, California are combining old and new in a super creative way. This 1972 650 Triumph was purchased as the shop errand runner, spending its time picking up parts, lunch, and what-have-you for the summer business, Pro Fiberglass. But then what started out as their hobby, their winter bike business, began gathering steam and the two decided they needed to do a rebuild and have a shop show bike to demonstrate their talents. In a quick three months, this old road warrior received new carbon clothes, including the tank, front fender, seat, number plates, and headlamp. The rest of the bike was finished off in “barbeque black.” The shop now had a bike that could demonstrate their business, making one-off parts for almost any vehicle that moves on land, sea, or air. At the same time they were combining old and new, they added semi-dirt tires to the vehicle making it appear to be a dual purpose bike. An off-roader conceived from a spring/fall parent union. Reza and Farzin have had a previous bike featured in our magazine. You can check out the Jan/March 2008 issue of Barnett’s to see that bike. We’ll have it in the archives of this site soon as well.
One of the reasons I selected this carbon clad old timer is that there seems to be a movement out there, not only restoring old bikes which has been going on forever, but restoring and upgrading them. Old bikes were always fast enough for street use, but so much progress has been made in tires, frames, suspension, and braking that quite a few builders simply can’t resist bringing some of the rest of the bike into the twenty-first century. I think we’ll be seeing a lot more mixed-up bikes like this in Barnett’s Magazine. Visit www.Undergroundbobbers.com for more or drop them an email them at GotBobbed@UndergroundBobbers.com.
