But as happens to most builders, the bike was sold before Ken could claim it as his own. He brought it to a rally as a roller and someone had to have it, finishing the specs out to his liking. The first thing the customer wanted was a Magnacharger blower attached to the 124” TP show polished monster motor. With a CV carb mounted, Ken tells us that the bike starts and runs flawlessly, just like his previous two blower bikes. Getting the power to the ground is one of Baker’s new Drop Starter Slam Clutch (DSSC) primary and transmission set ups. With flawless shifts and heavy duty strength, the massive torque is fed to the 300mm Metzeler using just one company’s products in the drivetrain arena. The lower location of the starter helps make possible the super low seat height of this Sattler V-Twin.
This unusual frame has the oil in the frame tubes with the filler behind the neck and the drain on the left side by the swingarm pivot. Ken can’t say enough about the frame, claiming it makes a decent rider out of some pretty outrageous custom components. Ken designed many of the small aluminum trim pieces fitted to the swingarm pivots and frame end tubes. Ego Tripp provided the exotic wheels and Accutronix the foot controls. The extensive metalwork on the bike was done by Kevin Brown, his Polypan partner. The customer was in some kind of space certified business and wanted an out-of-this-world paint job to finish off the bike. Dusold Designs out of Louisville, Texas applied this tribal flames and blue on the sides with a galaxy on top half-and-half paint job. In person, this job is simply over the top. Be sure and check out Sattler’s booth at local Texas rallies or even at Sturgis at times. While they might be well known for their seat pan product, some mean bikes come out of this Texas store as well.
Up Close
The Baker DSSC, Drop Starter Slam Clutch, primary and transmission set up is showing up on more and more bikes, a version of which even Big Dog has just started using. Much narrower than the traditional set up, the Baker DSSC gives you more foot clearance and a more balanced look from behind. Designed for right side drive, wide tire models, the space occupied by the left side countershaft pulley is no longer required so the clutch can be moved in 2”. This eliminates the clutch bulge which has been with us for years. The starter motor is also relocated which allows a lower seat height if the builder desires. The set up will work with a 250 tire running a belt final drive or a 300 running a chain. Inside the primary is a chain drive and nine plate wet clutch.
Builder: Ken Kirkpatrick
Ken Kirkpatrick got into the motorcycle business by way of hot rod cars and drag racing. Working on friends’ bikes for free eventually got him interested in changing careers and the auto repair sign was changed to a custom bike one. Sattler V-Twin now does custom one-off, build-to-spec customer bikes, wreck repairs, overhauls, installation of wide tire kits, as well as maintaining a full parts department. At first, Ken began building to stock his showroom but most bikes sold before finished so he now builds to order about a dozen customs a year for customers. He regularly attends the River City Bikefest, and the New Orleans and Galveston super rallies. You can check out his latest creations at these events. He has about a half dozen bikes on the lift at the moment, one with a Y2K frame, one chopper, and one Texas themed bike. Working with Kevin, the two are working hard on a new improved formulation for their seat pan product as well. You can check out Sattler V-Twin’s work online at www.sattlervtwin.com.
