Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s all a bit complicated when you think about it so don’t. Okay, here’s the Reader’s Digest version. DP and Local had a design competition where one person’s design was chosen and built by DP for sale on Local Motors online store. The winner, a Mr. Andre “Lude” Costa of Portugal, received a couple of grand for his efforts and tons of online notoriety. What Lude the Dude used for his inspiration was a BT 44 Brabham Formula 1 car in the always beautiful Martini Racing colors and that hit F1 freaks, Justin and Jarrod Del Prado, right where they lived. They’re a sucker for anything that hints of vintage European racing with other builds already influenced by little things like Steve McQueen s Porsche 917 from the movie Le Mans which we’ve previously run both in print and online. So, it’s no surprise to me that the boys picked a contest winner with racing as its main theme.
What they’ve done in that proverbial nutshell is take a pretty decent 100th Anniversary Sporty, chuck everything other than the front half of the frame, the engine, and possibly the forks and build from there. The build consisted of adding a rigid rear end, solid wheels, clip-ons, a dual-shock Chopper Shox saddle, and a DP Custom’s exhaust on the 1200cc XL engine. The direct Formula 1 connection involved the snorkel air scoop for the carb, the flipped-up spoiler on the fender, and the famous Martini tri-color over a white base paint job. For those of you who think this an oversimplification of the build behind this bike (me too!), here’s something to make an honest man out of me. Click on this link right here and I guarantee you’ll find a much better video interpretation of this build by the Del Prado brothers themselves.
If that’s too much for video for you, just try shooting over to DP Custom’s website at
www.dpcustomcycles.com and check it out for yourself or punch up Local Motors website http://localmotors.com/ where you can buy a version of this bike online.
