They say everything’s bigger in Texas, so it just makes sense that Alan Jensen, known to friends and family as “Tex,” would opt for a Harley the size of a baby whale.
Tex doesn’t live in Texas, but he does have a Texas-sized life, which includes one wife, two kids, five grandchildren, four horses, nine goats and five dogs. He runs his own construction business, plays drums in a rock band, and is a founding father of the Black Widows Motorcycle Club, located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Oh, and he rides Harleys.
His current ride, which he calls the Texhog THC, took six weeks to construct. “A friend of mine has a metal fabricating business, and he and I built the frame for it there,” said Tex. His goal was a clean-looking pivot bike, with no visible wires or cable. “I wanted the metal to flow correctly,” he explained.
Almost all the parts for the Texhog were custom built and modified for this project, including reconfiguring the tank and designing the handlebars, oil tank, seat and electrical system.
The mellow yellow paint was added by Rod’s Paint and Metal, and Dan Keys applied the subtle pinstripes. The overall effect is that of a flawlessly sleek, gentle giant with softly flowing lines and a customized seat that hides the swingarm.
Tex wanted a Hardtail look with Softail comfort, and feels that he accomplished that mission. “It’s extremely comfortable, and handles like a dream,” he said of the Texhog THC. He’s logged over 10,000 miles so far, using it as his daily ride as well as for longer treks, including trips to Sturgis and, of course, the Republic of Texas (ROT) Rally in Austin.
When he’s not working, drumming or hanging out with farm and family, Tex can usually be found chillaxin’ with his biker buddies, the Black Widows, at their clubhouse in Fort Smith. The Black Widows were formed over a decade ago, and gather regularly to party, play music, drink beer and talk motorcycles. They’re Harley riders with heart, and one of their mottos is, “Paying it forward is always better than simply paying it back.”
The rules of the club are simple. Rule one: There are no rules. Rule two: If you’re in, you’re in. If you have to ask, you’re not. Rule three: The president of the Black Widows is the biker with the biggest belly. Maybe the real reason for all that beer drinking is just a quest for leadership.
At the annual Black Widow Christmas party, names of new members are announced and points covers, engraved with spiders, are given to the happy inductees. Santa couldn’t bring a better present.
During warmer weather though, you can often find Tex’s chopper parked in front of the Black Widow Warehouse for spring and summer socializing. If he’s not there, he’s probably out on the winding Arkansas roads, logging more miles while dreaming up plans for his next one-off. “I’m going to build a 300 series tire Pro-Street style bike with a radical backbone and engine,” he said. Yet another great, big ass bike.
