Going all out, Jason spec’d a high end TP 124” motor, 5 speed Baker transmission, RC Wizard wheels, and a 240 Metzeler rear tire. The Pagan Green paint with silver tribal flames was applied by Shane at Staten Island’s Wetcoats and according to Dr. Digby, he did a first class job. The bike ends up getting groped a lot, as people want to reach down and feel the smoothness of the paint. Green is a tough color to get to print right, but it just jumped off the computer screen when we first viewed the images. We even picked up on the small “tooth” logo on the tank, representing Dr. Digby’s dental practice. I wonder if this bike will eventually make it to his business cards as well. It gets parked in front of the office on nice days. It would tilt me towards his practice if I saw it in the yellow pages.
Again, concerned with comfort, a Keith’s Custom seat was ordered with a little extra padding under the Hornback alligator covering. The doctor reports a certain 25 cent massaging bed type feeling which along with the built in flex of the long bike, gives it a good ride. And here’s the kicker, ride he does. The bike was not meant to be a trailer queen, and Jason took it out for 200 miles his first day and racked up 2700 miles his first year. While long distance Electra Glide riders might not be impressed, that 2700 miles is pretty close to the average Harley-Davidson owner’s 3,400 first year mileage. Jason credits the extra give in the Super Stretch model and the high quality TP motor for the surprising comfort this show bike provides.
The doctor also reports extremely good reliability with the whole package so far. It is usually in the first thousand miles that custom bikes give their owners the most trouble, but this bike came sorted. The manual compression releases on each head have eliminated big engine starter woes. And the excellence balance of the TP motor has kept parts from loosening up and jumping ship. This was a bit of a surprise to me since most 124s I’ve listened to have popped and roared like funny cars and required their owners to loctite bolts like crazy and made some pretty big belt drives cry uncle.
I was glad Dr. Digby submitted this bike to us. It was refreshing to hear that he was treated so well by OCC and has had such good luck with his bike. In the end, there’s the saying that you get what you pay for, and this T-Rex Rigid was built up with high end components which have provided a rewarding experience for this Mississippi dentist who gets his thrills on two wheels like the rest of us.
