Extreme Trailers & Choppers is a small business in Central Florida specializing is super sleek, aerodynamic bike haulers. They also have a shop on the premises, and enjoy building radical bikes for themselves and others.
Derrick and James are partial to Sportster engines; they are quick and great to work on. “The Sportster is a neat motor, and is really under-appreciated,” said Derrick as I quizzed him about this feature. “[Sportsters have] the reputation of being a girls bike. We wanted to build a bad-ass Sportster chopper, just to mess with all the guys who say that.”
While rigid Sportster frames are rather common, Derrick really wanted this project to have some suspension. For this, he turned to Steven at War Eagle Customs. War Eagle has a huge line of production frames, and the softail Sportster chopper frame ready to go with a 5” up and 5” out stretch was just the ticket. Derrick also picked up a War Eagle gas tank and oil bag, and his project was off to a great start.
The frame was fitted with 12” over Mean Street forks with 5º in the trees and a set of Paul Yaffe wheels. Avon tires put the roller on the ground and it was time for fabrication. Derrick complimented the WCC front fender with custom rear tin. The sheet metal was sent to High Gloss for paint and set of classic pearl red flames.
Ready for final assembly, Derrick proudly mounted the Sportster Evo Drivetrain. Ness bars, headlight and pegs were added, as well as Dakota Digital gauges and Excel brakes. Thunder Heart completed the wiring and electrical. A custom Schrek’s seat finished it all off and this beauty was on the road to the shows!
“People told us not to do it. Not to bother putting a Sportster motor in a softail. That just egged us on.” Here’s to you!
The Extreme Chopper has won numerous trophies and can be seen at shows in the area. For more information on this bike, or on Extreme Choppers visit www.fourextreme.com or call the shop at 352-669-4528.
