So it’s not the bike or the builder in particular, so it must be about the back story and it obviously is. If you’ve seen the 2011 movie, Machine Gun Preacher, starring Gerard Butler as our story’s real life person, Sam Childers, you already know the story behind the story. But if you haven’t, check out the movie trailer here. Or, you could read Sam’s book that led to the movie, Another Man’s War, and it fills in a lot of spaces. For those of you afraid to punch the accompanying video, the story is about a young biker going to the dark side and living the life until he had one of those epiphany moments where doing good instead of doing bad, really bad, became a new way of life. Sam’s story is an inspiring one and worth checking into.
Sam’s charity work through his organization, Angles of East Africa, revolves around trying to make life possible under the almost insurmountable odds facing children of the South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda. Horrible rebel wars and torturous living conditions have made it about as close to impossible for a young kid in these countries to reach adulthood without incredibly horrible experiences. He’s responsible for orphanages and schools being built and run by volunteers and locals who try and help kids have a future where they can be responsible adults who have not forgotten what hope is. It definitely is a feel-good story of overcoming impossible odds in every direction possible.
What we’ve got here then is also a tale of generosity by an anonymous Floridian who donated his OCC chop to Angels of East Africa to raffle off to make more money for Sam to invest in the lives of African children. For all the details on getting a ticket that might get you a custom OCC chopper and some Sudanese kid a good night’s sleep, visit Sam’s website http://www.machinegunpreacher.org/ or check it out on Facebook.
