Making a good, steady living out of this whacky business has been something Jerry has excelled at and he somehow always seems to have the skinny on what’s next to be hot. For instance, he jumped on the Harley bagger wagon at the very beginning and has never looked back. With a continuing flow of high-quality and unique bagger parts along with all-out bagger customs that should tickle the fancy of any bagger lover, Covingtons Cycle City shows that it has the stones and the talent to enter any area of custom motorcycles and not just succeed, but excel. With the continuing custom heritage Jerry’s built up over the decades, that’s not a surprise, but a given.
For a big company like Jerry’s, showcasing your parts and actually getting the public to notice (and buy) is as important as coming up with some new widget. Who cares if you made the best part ever if no one knows you did? This is where builders come up with a bike showcase that sometimes can outshine the new part it’s supposed to be stuffing in your line of vision. In this case, it’s Covingtons’ 2-into1 Destroyer exhaust that looks damn big enough to hang under the door of a Shelby Cobra 427 SC. Hey, it’s probably a great exhaust and all, but that’s not what’s getting my interest in this particular build.
What’s getting my attention is the engraving, etching, or whatever you want to call it that this Road Glide is slathered in where ever there is unpainted metal. Have you taken the time to check out Jack Cofano’s photo of the front wheel in the gallery? Yeah it’s a big and tall wheel like you’d expect on any custom bagger worthy of its name, but Geez Louise, that thing is filigreed to the nth degree and then some. And, then you notice the fork legs are deliciously chipped away at until they look like some kind of sleeve tattoo in metal. Or, the surfaces of all the engine covers and handlebars sport ongoing attention to detail that rivals any intricate paint job by the best air brush jockeys.
Maybe it’s just my infatuation with engravers, but the exhaust was one of the last things I happened to look at although I did look at it and liked it a lot so maybe this showcase of a bike is doing the biz. Maybe Jerry’s just a hell of a lot smarter than even I gave him credit for and that’s why he’s still swimming in a sea of custom motorcycle builders without getting wet or sweating it.
Oh, by the way, the rest of this bike is wearing lots of metallic apparel from Covingtons Cycle City’s extensive line of bagger parts. To check out all the gorgeous bagger stuff Jerry manufactures and sells, visit www.covingtonscyclecity.com.
