Picking a Road Glide was an easy choice for G-Right who said, “Every time I throw my leg over the bike I know I have what I want. I love the longer wheelbase as it’s like going from a Corvette to a Cadillac. The ride is so smooth and comfortable.” But leaving it factory fresh was not part of plan for the Fort Washington, Maryland resident. “I spent some time on the West Coast and being from the East Coast I never saw a Road Glide. I loved the smooth look of the lines and the slick flow of the customized West Coast bikes so I decided to build something that was not on the East Coast biker set at the time.”
Planning something and actually getting it done are two different things. According to G-Right, “In 2009 I couldn’t find anyone in Maryland to install a Paul Yaffe 23” front wheel and a 7-degree rake kit on my Road Glide so I had to ship my bike to his shop in Phoenix, Arizona, to have the work done. “No big surprise that after getting into Mr. Yaffe’s shop, G-Right ended up getting a lot more done other than just a front wheel fitment. Oh little things like a matching Yaffe 18” rear wheel, Yaffe tank extended tank, 12” rise Yaffe bars, Yaffe engine guards, Yaffe mirrors, Yaffe stereo, and a Yaffe paintjob over the Bad Dad front fender and Matrix Cycles rear fender to mention a few of the changes. They don’t all him smilin’ Paul for nothing.
Unlike most heavily-customized baggers whose owners are more than happy with The Motor Company’s stock 96-incher, G-Right upped the Twin Cam ante with a good bit of road punch. The mill was treated to ported and polished heads, custom ground “big” cams, Screamin’ Eagle air cleaner, and a Bub 7/Thunder Header exhaust. Phil Smith of Karma Cycles and Tim Krish and Kenneth Thomas of Fort Washington Harley-Davidson were responsible for the engine upgrades that G-Right has put over 15,000 miles on.
With all the changes, G-Right is particularly pleased with the big front wheel and the gas tank. “I love the extra fuel that I can carry. When the guys and I go out riding, I have a quarter more fuel than they have when we stop for gas,” he said. “And I love the 23” wheel. When people see that big wheel rolling I get so many thumbs up it’s crazy. I’m not used to that, but it is real cool.”
So now that G-Right’s got his retirement and his dream bike, what’s he gonna do with all his spare time? Well besides riding the hell out of it along with his buddies from the local chapter of the ‘O’ MENS motorcycle club of which he’s president, he’s dreaming of another build. “I have a plan to put another bike together, but all I will say right now is that it will be a Harley-Davidson touring bike,” said G-Right. Just hearing his plan should keep Paul Yaffe a happy man.
