Over the years there have been quite a few bikes built to promote the Rat’s Hole Show and Ted Smith’s personal bobber charmingly called Rat Poison is another tidy little ride that continues that tradition. First built back in 2005 and sent on a tour of the show circuit, it’s recently been refreshed and upgraded by Jailhouse Choppers in Savannah, Georgia. The rigid frame features a 4”-stretch with a 34-degre rake with a chromed –out 4”-over springer and that’s a nice formula for a spot-on street bike. Agility is key on a quick little bobber and quick comes courtesy of the 88” Pandemonium Panhead that’s got power and reliability along with retro good looks. A way-cool Mooneyes Muroc Bologna velocity stack on the S&S Super E carb only adds to the Panhead’s attractiveness if that’s possible. V-Twin Manufacturing pipes lets the fat lady sing like only a Pan can.
Ted’s bike is imbued with classic bobber-styling cues like the Sporty tank, modified trailer fender, hand shifter, and lever-free mini- apes to name just a few. The striking red paint is a hard to beat Porsche Guards Red with classy flame pinstriping by Dan Kite Pinstriping. Putting that all together with a set of spoked wheels with white walls and a gorgeous rolled and pleated white leather solo seat and P-pad with black piping by Stitch On Time, this nostalgic bobber looks like it could be pulled directly from a 1959 issue of ROD & Custom magazine. It’s a clean, mean, little bobbing around machine and a good showcase for the Rat’s Hole Show and the hard work the Smith family has put into making it a must see event.
