Blue Custom started out as a 2007 Street Glide and got a serious Covingtons’ performance upgrade with a 103″ Twin Cam stuffed full of Screamin’ Eagle parts. A Terry Components EFI Controller handles the intake side of things while Covingtons Signature Series True Dual Hot Rod pipes takes care of the exit strategy for spent gases. “We originally came out with the Hot Rod pipe for 2-into-1 custom bikes, and everybody liked it so we did the Hot Rod pipes for the baggers.” When all was said and done, the bike dyno’d at 112hp and 115lb-ft of torque.
Running all that power to the rear wheel is no problem-o as Bert Baker’s latest innovative transmission was drafted into duty. If 5-speeds are fine and 6-speeds are even better then BAKER’s DD7 7-speed must be a rider’s nirvana. “We use BAKERS in about everything we do, whenever we can,” Jerry said. “I love ’em. First thing they do is get rid of that clang that sounds like you hit the side of your bike with a hammer when you put it in first gear . . . that’s gone when you put a BAKER in. And then it shifts so smooth. Then, [on the 7-speed] you get all the performance from it ’cause you don’t drop torque twenty gears. It’s like adding performance when you put that one in. You don’t have to build it back up between each gear like you do like other transmissions because it doesn’t drop as much.” Shane’s obviously a fan of the DD7 as well because he already owns “three or four” of the 7-speeds.
Giving the bike baggerlicious attitude is a tall 23” Rampage Lucky 7 front wheel with a matching 18-incer out back. A single 6-piston Jaybrake front caliper provides ample stopping power with a commanding view of the 7-spoke front hoop covered in Avon rubber. Adding to the baggerliciousness is the key ingredient to any hot rod or hot rod bagger― the stance. The dropped front end with Covingtons’ neat fork bells and American Suspension lower legs is mirrored by the Arnott Air Suspension Products air shocks which adjust for height and ride comfort on the go and slam to ground when parked. Covingtons’ front-and-rear fenders give a nod to practicality with a deep sense of style. Speaking of style, this bike so is littered with custom parts from Covington’s extensive list of custom bagger parts that there’s just not enough room to list them all. Look at the pics and check out Covington’s website where you’ll come up with a wish list that’ll make you cry, but in a good manly way. Even if you’re not a man.
Covingtons’ Dusty Brown and Brian Loker gave the bike its Candy Blue and Royal Flake base paintjob, with Brian doing the silver and black tribal stripe that takes trivial tribal where it’s never gone before. The finished tribal side stripes make tribal fresh again, but in a totally new and classy way. “I love the paintjob, it looks really good and it’s my favorite part of the bike,” said Jerry. It was Shane who added the alligator seat, a choice Jerry said he probably wouldn’t have made. “The customer had that done; it’s not something I would have done. If I were going to do alligator I would have leather with alligator inserts, but that’s just me,” Jerry said.
Jerry said the bike “rides awesome” and he should know. He always test rides all of his bikes and the mileage he puts on varies, but this one was so much fun he put 80 miles on it right away. Part of Jerry’s enviable success as a builder is that he and his crew of 15 do things like that, have fun while building everything at the shop that bears his now famous name. “We did the whole bike, everything,” Jerry said. “We always do.”
Up close: Covingtons True-Dual Exhaust
The second thing just about anybody does when they get a new Harley bagger is to schedule an oil change. It seems the first thing they do is change their exhaust and uncork the sleeping beast. With all the many, many exhaust systems out there and new ones popping up like insects to a lit porch light every day, it’s getting harder and harder to pick the right one and feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. It sure doesn’t hurt to check out those units built by a company or a builder with a good reputation for delivering what they promise.
Take the good looking Hot Rod True-Dual crossover exhaust system on our feature bike for instance. Jerry Covington of Covingtons Cycle City in Woodward, Oklahoma, has stepped up to the plate and designed the Covingtons Signature Series of Hot Rod pipes for baggers built by Bassani, one of the most respected names in the business. The True-Dual crossover pipes featuring 1.75” head pipes have stylish, full length, holed heat shields and come in a choice of black ceramic or chrome finish capped by a set of Jerry’s black inlay billet end caps. These made-in-the-USA pipes include O2 sensor port plugs to make sure your Harley is running at its best performance wise and reliably. Their appearance will compliment your bagger’s custom looks while providing the appreciated benefit of more power and a richer sound track to put the miles on. If you’re feeling a bit like Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel and want to take it to eleven, the baffles are removable too. Jerry’s got it all covered.

Builder: Jerry Covington
Jerry Covington is just one of those guys who’s bigger than life. Big in talent, big in style, and big in business. He’s no braggart, though, his works speaks for him and it clearly shows his creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. The custom bikes he’s created through his business, Covingtons Cycle City in Woodward, Oklahoma, have big front ends, big frames, and big engines and that’s fine with him. He builds what he likes and what he wants and how he wants to. The workmanship is beyond-beyond and he rides the hell out of those one-offs. Even if they aren’t your style, you can’t help but see the sheer quality of his builds. That’s not a surprise, though, as he’s been at this for, well let’s just say a very long time. His expansive shop that he opened in 1993 in Woodward has the ability to create and manufacture basically everything in-house giving Jerry control over the quality of everything bearing his name.
“Business is pretty good right now,” Jerry said. “We’re building a lot of custom baggers, custom bikes and of course we manufacture parts too.
Our best selling parts are the ignition covers, dashes, fork bells, bagger latches. That stuff sells all really good.” He also said raking bikes is big business these days. “This Blue Custom isn’t raked in the pictures but we’ve raked it since then. A lot of the 26’s and stuff like that. It’s popular,” said Jerry. “I’ve got nine waiting right now. They’re coming in from everywhere.”
Keeping quality under control is important to Jerry, as he’s branched out beyond just doing one-offs with a line of affordable production customs that should be on your short list if you’re in the market. From the current fad of bobbers to tall and long choppers, there’s something for everybody. From the high-quality American parts working in conjunction with Covington’s in-house parts and build quality, Jerry gives you a ton of bang for your buck.
