The Harley-Davidson Road Glide is a motorcycle that reminds me of that old saying, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Every time I talk to a rider who owns a Road Glide and ask them, “How do you like your bike?” I get replies like, “Best riding motorcycle that Harley ever made,” or “I don’t know why I waited so long before buying a Road Glide. I wouldn’t ride any other model. The Road Glide is the only real touring bike.” And the list of favorable answers goes on. Actually, I’ve never got a negative remark from any rider who owns a Road Glide, so this model must be in Harley’s top category when it comes to touring and comfort.
Danny “Hambone” Hammond’s bike dubbed, “Transformer” started out as a brand new 2006 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic. Danny was very pleased with the bike, but after riding it a few years he also wanted a Road Glide model. Most wives can agree on their husbands owning at least one expensive toy, but two Harley-Davidson touring motorcycles in the garage is over the limit.
Since Hambone could not get approval from the financial Head of Household to buy himself a new H-D Road Glide, he had to innovate. The idea of transforming his current Electra Glide into a Road Glide, which meant changing fairings, was a lot less expensive way to get the bike he wanted. And this idea could be agreed upon by the whole family.
Once Hambone started the transformation process, he decided to take his customizing a few steps further than planned. He had his engine reworked and hopped it up to 103 cubic-inches, and when the Road Glide fairing was added, he decided on a complete new custom paint job. Jud Cowley of Cowley Cycle located in Sachse, Texas did most of the customizing on the bike, and Gary from Other Side Customs located in Dallas, Texas did the paint job. He added a set of new custom wheels and several other custom parts to enhance the bike’s overall appearance. “If you are going to ride a Harley, the owner should be completely happy and satisfied with his machine. He should be proud of his or her motorcycle, or he/she should not even own a bike,” stated Hambone.
Hambone is a native of southern California, so he’s seen more than his share of good looking custom motorcycles. About five years ago, he and his family moved to the Dallas, Texas area, where he owns and operates a trucking business. “I work hard, so when I have some free time, I want to ride a nice looking, and comfortable motorcycle, like the one I own,” said Hambone.
We’ll see you on the road!
