Dave St. George of beautiful Lake Havasu City, Arizona, spent six years building this head-turning bagger, now his daily rider, and he enjoyed every minute of it.
“I built it here in my home garage,” he said. “I work on motorcycles as a hobby, and I build a lot of custom parts, one-of-a-kind parts for motorcycles. My buddy Mike Love, who did the paint, we work together on bikes. He does the paint and I do the parts, I do the tear downs for him and put it back together for paint.”
Since the age of 18, Dave has built a dozen or more bikes, having been bitten by the bike bug when he hopped on a motor scooter. “I got on and that was it for me,” he said. “I’ve been into bikes ever since. This one, I bought a big ol’ stocker and just started working on it, saving my money for the paintjob.”
The design for the Road Glide build came from Dave, Mike, and another friend. “My requirements were that the black had to be next to the frame, because I think a bike that’s painted — the frame should match the color of the bike. I didn’t want red next to the black frame. So the bike was designed around that. So they kind of sketched it out on paper, and we put the bike together, not completely, but we set everything on it and then they started laying out what they wanted me to do.
Dave said, “We had the bagger already and the fenders all off and lowered. I did all that, and ground a lowering block for the fenders so they didn’t look square. Mine are all rounded and kind of sunk. And then they laid it out and called me over and said, ‘What do you think?’ and I said, ‘Go for it.'”
The unusual look of the mirrors comes from Dave’s work on a pair of H-D Screamin’ Eagle mirrors. “I cut the bottoms off because they were too high,” he said. “I took about an inch and a half off them and then lowered them way down and re-chopped the hole so they’d look like they look because I didn’t want them sitting way up high.”
The only real problem Dave ran into during the build was the Screamin’ Eagle dashboard, but that’s a problem better left to ask Dave in person, because I don’t want to be sued by any big corporations. Changing the subject, I will say that Dave’s got three different windshields he swaps out, and he made his own removable tour pack to match the paint. “My tour pack mounts so I wouldn’t have that big old ugly thing like Harley has with the tour pack on it. So it comes on and off. My wife won’t ride on the back without it. I’ve got three seats for it. The seat I put on for her we call the Barkerlounger,” he said, laughing. Living in Lake Havasu makes for perfect riding weather nearly every day. “The bike’s got 50,000 miles on it so far, I use it all the time,” Dave added.
If you’re heading to Laughlin this year check out Dave’s bike, and Mike Love’s bike also, at the Renegade Wheels booth where both bikes will be on display.
