But, there are some people who can see the good right through the bad and Dustin Maybin of Eastern Rod & Chopper in Hendersonville, North Carolina, is definitely one of them. This relatively young guy took a homely (I’m being kind here) Volare Road Runner and reworked it until it became something I never thought I’d ever say about one of these, but here it goes, he made it beautiful. Smooth, sweet, and flowing. Three words I would never have associated with a Volare or its sister model, the Dodge Aspen. It should be no surprise then that someone who can take a chunk of clunk and turn it into something to lust after could do the same for a Harley bagger.
What Dustin has done to this show bike bagger is different than the usual custom bagger and with all the custom baggers roaming the garages and show floors out there, that’s saying something. His take is low with a flow that somehow ends up looking skinny, a word I never associate with a bagger of all things. The whole gorgeous blue body from head tube to taillight looks like it should be able to come off in one piece. Instead of extending the bags like everybody else does, his appear to be sectioned and lowered hot-rod style. Dustin’s sparse design-style only accentuates everything he’s done and his take on a fairing is, to use an overworked and misunderstood term, unique. Whether it still works as a fairing is up for grabs, but the look sure works for me. Different, but not garish or silly for the sake of it.
Everything’s so low including the handlebars that want to be sport bike clip-ons that I’m surprised this bike didn’t feature the first set of rearset floorboards on a bagger I know of. They wouldn’t look the least bit out of place here. Even the paint scheme is a different take on the old skull graphics where you don’t even notice them from the side until you get over or behind the bike and they actually are an attractive addition helping things to flow even more. If you like custom baggers, there’s a lot to like about this bike the more you look.
Dustin really did a spectacular job on what was his first take on a custom bagger. The only problem he has is how to out do himself on the next one.
