Gathering at Quail Lodge Part 1
Story and Photos by Rodent
Up until August 2009, the Legends of the Motorcycle was the best motorcycle show ever produced. It was the Pebble Beach for motorcycles. Location, class, it had it all. The recession hit and that was the end of “Legends.” Pebble Beach grabbed the ball and 2009 saw the first time in 59 years that motorcycles graced the 19th green at Pebble Beach. Also there was a small event and auction at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley. This year the Quail event is being touted as the new “Legends” and Pebble Beach is again adding motorcycles to their Concours. Quail has a Bonham’s Vintage Auction along with some special builds.
Mike Corbin and I took a ride from his facility in Hollister to Carmel Valley in his turbo Porsche to nose around. Any excuse to ride shotgun in a 190mph, 450 horsepower Porsche gets my blood flowing. We drove into Quail like we owned it. Nobody questions you in a car like this. We nosed around as bikes were arriving for set up and wandered up to Bonham’s auction to watch the preparation. Mike drooled over a CORBIN electric bike that was 1 of 100 that he had built back in the early 70’s. Mike said that we were coming back on Saturday in his Mercedes van. That meant one thing, the CORBIN electric bike might be coming home with us! (continued Monday, May 31)
