Personally, I don’t think there’s a line out of place in the Knucklehead’s persona and that’s unusual as I can always find a fault or two on most engines without even wanting or trying to. Panheads are way cool too, but they’re not the unblemished beauty queen a Knucklehead is. Luckily I don’t have to justify the beauty of this build by Michael Kamalian of Revolution Speed in Marietta, Georgia, just by the engine alone. Far from it kids. Michael’s racy Knucklehead is such a lustful object to me on so many levels I feel I might need professional help. This bike rocks!
After taking a look at this bike and sensing the flat track, speedway, Bonneville and drag racing cues, it doesn’t take much to guess that the need for speed is in Michael’s DNA. He’s raced some serious sports cars like a Le Mans Prototype 2 and in SCCA’s D Sports class and neither of these is a muckabout form of racing for gentlemen with engines too small for a motorcycle. This is balls-out stuff and you can see his racing lineage incorporated from front to back of this Knuck. Like a true racer, there’s nothing here that doesn’t have to be and as we all know, there’s beauty in utter simplicity.
As for the Knucklehead itself, it’s a perfect showcase for why we all love air-cooled 45-degree V-twin engines. There’s every bit of mechanical Steampunk character the Knuckleheads are famous for and Michael’s finish work only accentuates every line and detail. And, yes, the detail work is exquisite. Toss on a flawless, yet extraordinarily simple gray paintjob to make sure all the bits look their best and Michael’s got a Knucklehead winner on his hands if ever there was one. The only thing I wish was different was that I could say I’ve ridden it, but I haven’t. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to get that urge off my bucket list, but I’m not giving up as one ride would be something to shoot for and I know it would run as good as it looks. And, even if it didn’t for some unfathomable reason, it sure is pretty.
