Larry Moore’s 2008 Limited Edition Big Dog Mastiff
Story by Wendy Manning, Photos by Rodent
This Limited Edition 2008 Big Dog Mastiff belonging to Larry Moore of El Paso, Texas, takes him from 0 to 60 in under four-seconds. Combine that with mileage claimed to be over 40 mpg and almost five gallons of fuel aboard and Larry’s got one long range, high-speed cruiser capable of eating up long desert roads in one fell (and very quick) swoop. Dynamite describes this cruiser and it’s as high performance as it is striking, touting a mind blowing 117 cubic-inch V-twin engine and Big Dog’s award-winning 6-speed Balance Drive system with a redesigned clutch that makes for easy shifting.
When Larry hops on this long and low stunner, he can expect to attract lots of attention too. There’s just something about a long Pro Street bike pulling up to a traffic light that makes you feel something’s gonna happen when the light goes green. Just like the standard Mastiff, the Limited Edition includes 4-piston brakes front and rear that make for assured stopping power; a speedometer with an integrated LED tachometer; a sweeping 2-into-1 exhaust; and an active hidden-shock suspension to give you one of the smoothest, most comfortable rides around, whether you’re off to see the country or off to the coffee shop.
Big Dog Motorcycles are known far and wide for such design touches as an immense 300mm rear tire; curved down tubes to accentuate the bike’s long, low silhouette, a stretched one-piece tank, and an aggressive 42-degree rake, but these goodies are all the more enticing with the Limited Edition Mastiff’s black styling cues. From the three awesome paintjobs ― all-black, black with pinstripe, or black with flames, Larry chose black with flames. Taking a quick look at Larry’s bike and you can understand that Big Dog adheres to the belief that “black powdercoated elements complement the bike’s black stretched tank and steel fenders. These include the handlebars, headlight, struts, and engine. The engine gets another stylish touch with Diamond Heads diamond-cut heads and cylinders. Adding to the 740-pound ready-to-ride, 8½-foot long motorcycle’s ominous look is its black–cut 12-spoke billet wheels.” The understated blacked-out styling doesn’t demand attention like a dip in a chromer’s vat might, but the super clean lines and the low stance will always draw a true custom enthusiast in to take a closer look.
Upon the 2008 release of the Limited Edition Mastiff, the then president of Big Dog, Nick Messer, described the bike as paying respect to the company’s top Pro Street cruiser while hitting the riders’ sweet spots with its winning combo of high-performance features. Initial production figures of only 125 of these Limited Editions were to be made available helps to makes sure that this is one production custom bike that Larry will not see coming-and-going when he’s out riding.
