Whether it’s tractors, cars, or motorcycles, Mecum puts a huge number of vehicles through their many auction lines nation wide. With some 750 bikes going under the hammer in Vegas, it’s gotta be one of the country’s largest motorcycle auctions ─ a good start for 2015!
What’s it like seeing some 750 motorcycles in one room? More exotic, vintage, unusual, classic, motorcycles than the Guggenheim ever had. It’s like taking all the bikes off Main Street in Sturgis and putting them in one room with the exception that I didn’t see one ubiquitous black bagger. Mecum also had a few side vendors. Kiwi Mike and Jeff Decker both ran booths with their fine quality offerings. It was all in good taste. Not even an ambulance chasing shyster!
The local Harley dealer threw a pre-auction party for the people attending Mecum on site. They also had a open house at the dealership located adjoining the airport. The loudest sound you hear is not a Harley being revved to red line, but a Boeing or Airbus winding up for takeoff. Scary location especially if a landing plane misjudged ─ no more dealership.
Looks like Mecum solved the drip containment problem with little rubber mats, a little more appealing than the ugly drip pans Bonhams used. Still don’t understand why a rug shampoo wouldn’t solve the problem. All in all it was a great event without the hoopla of profilers cruising the street.
