Starting with a six up and three out frame, Mitch added 18” over forks and a 280 series rear tire. This gave him a super long bike, with a lot of give in it for comfort, and an absolute minimum amount of weight. When the 127” Ultima motor was fitted, the result was a screamer, almost too much motor for the application. The bike got faster and faster as it was breaking-in and Mitch reports that the big monster doesn’t even shake that much and is really quite comfortable. As usual, the bike was finished off with a wide variety of one-off custom parts, the kinds of things that give Mitch Bergeron Customs their distinctive style. These include the gas and oil tanks, pipes, handlebars, fender, and a host of smaller items. One such small touch is the valve springs with valves used to suspend the seat.
The molding and painting were sent out to Stan Howton of Canada, the person Mitch uses on his high end bikes. The ultra clean final product gives the Discovery bike a subtle elegance, enough to win his BBO contest and turn it into a keeper for the boss.
Mitch’s shop is located in Thousand Palms, California where he pretty much spends most of his time creating high end bikes for customers. He can work with people through e-mail to get started building or he welcomes visits. Soon he will have his own line of hardtail frames for home builders or shops to use. He will be bringing a number of his bikes to display at Laughlin, Santa Maria, and Irvine in the early part of the summer and should be at Sturgis as well for customers to check out his work.
