Every year, the traveling MotoGP circus comes to northern California for one of the best shows of the year. The American Superbike racing teams also race this weekend and set up in orderly rows in the paddock. The MotoGP teams are hidden and guarded in high security. I prefer hanging with the folks at Ducati Island in the racetrack’s infield with the thousands of spectator-owned Ducatis parked nearby and the Ducati factory’s excellent shaded espresso stand. Friday is practice for the various classes and it’s just a hangout day for most spectators; it let’s them check out the hundred or so vendors set up in the infield. Once the day ends, the party starts all over the hills under the watchful eyes of the sheriffs and CHIP officers. Helmets are required except in the paddock area. No drinking and riding, just a great party both Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday night, thousands of riders also go down to nearby Monterrey to hang out at Cannery Row which has been cleaned up for a major street party. On Sunday, fifty-two thousand spectators saw former, and most likely the next, World Champion 24-year-old New Zealander Casey Stoner clean everyone’s clock. The total three day attendance was claimed to be over 100 thousand people.
