Nicolas built the foundation for this bike with a swingarm frame that doesn’t have a straight line in sight. Seemingly too delicate to be a real motorcycle frame, Nicolas created an interesting juxtaposition by using an retro-style S&S Shovelhead alternator/generator engine to power this futuristic fantasy on wheels. He fabricated a set of exhaust pipes that appear to be dancing with the frame more than dumping out the remnants of combustion. If it wasn’t for the wide, ribbed Robbans cover enclosing a 2” BDL primary, this bike would be thinner than Nicole Richie on a bad day. The 4-speed RevTech transmission changes gears via a Pingel two-button electric shifter mounted on the organically-styled handlebars which seem barely attached to the top triple tree. There are no foot controls, just foot pegs and their design identically mimics the minimalist hand grips. A kickstarter holds the only key to the potential brutality of this new dimension of travel.
Nicolas made the gas tank appear to be just a stylistic element on its own rather than a fuel container. It floats above the engine pointing forward and races the world’s longest oil tank spoiler at the bottom of the half-a-circle downtube. Adding even more linear interest is the arcing swingarm which mysteriously holds a super tall, 120-spoke 23” wheel without a fastener in sight. A Kustom Tech caliper hides behind the swingarm and does its best to grab the sprocket and do its job as the only brake on this bike. A Chauvin- modified fork is raked out to the horizon with small diameter tubes grasping another 23” wheel which just hangs out in space like it’s broken away from the mother ship. The Avon Venom 130 tires look skinnier than normal on these very tall wheels, almost bicycle-like. Nicolas bolted on a DBX Industries headlight, probably the easiest thing he did on the whole project. Apparently feeling guilty, he integrated LED lights in the Crime Scene Choppers seat which he modified with hidden mounting points.
The opening narration of the TV show hosted the late Rod Serling might describe Back in Black best: “You’re traveling through another dimension æ a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of the imagination. That’s a signpost up ahead . . . your next stop, The Twilight Zone!”

European custom builders seem to have a style all their own. Their interpretation of American V-twin customs is no copycat, one step behind the latest trend as you might expect from people who appear to worship the American motorcycle lifestyle from afar. Like so many of us, Nicholas Chauvin was heavily influenced by the 1969 icon of motorcycle movies, Easy Rider, which, combined with a natural talent for art, fired up his dreams. Nicolas had built his first custom bike back at age 14 and worked on his friends’ bikes giving him a taste of what was to come. After graduating from art school, he worked as an airbrush illustrator for advertising agencies and this talent has carried over to the bikes he paints at his full-time business, Nicolas Chauvin Design. Tripping through his website, you’ll be bombarded by a cacophony of color from the peacock palette he’s unafraid to use. Intricate, elaborate paintjobs cover a wild assemblage of customs he’s made over the years. He prefers to build bikes more for himself than as saleable models, although I’m sure he’ll help you change those dollars into euros. Barnett’s feature bike, Back in Black, is listed as being for sale on his website, although no price is listed. You’re on your own there. In the past 20 years, Nicolas has made a name for himself by continuously raking in trophies for his work.
