If you love riding, not owning a way-out expensive bike isn’t going to stop you. In that case, it’s not what you ride, but who you ride with that makes all the difference. Nobody knows that better than Paula Hokkanen (shown far right in the photo above). Paula, who lives in Minneapolis, rides a 2006 black Sportster that was built in her garage and at the Boar House Shop, a full-service H-D shop in Lino Lakes, over a long Minnesota winter. Paula met up with other women while taking the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge Course. “My girls that I ride with are Lori Morgan, Melissa Freiberg Larson, and Malinda Henderson.” Calling themselves “The Divas,” the women are on a mission to find a new kidney for Melissa, as well as others who are in need of a new kidney. “I coordinate a benefit Kidney Run for Melissa every June. We’re gearing up again to start networking and passing out flyers at upcoming bike events.”
As for Paula’s Sportster, she loves it, pure and simple. “The bike is killer to ride, fun-fun in the corners, very smooth and I have been known to accidentally pop the front tire from the power in the engine. I plan on keeping the bike for quite some time, but I will want to eventually want to upgrade to a Street Glide. My brother Pat Lund was and is my main mechanic,” said Paula, who is a Customer Loyalty Manager for Environmental Graphics, LLC. “It was a combined effort. I loved my bike, but felt that after riding her a bit that she needed a few things done. I would commute 60 miles a day to work and I noticed that at take off’s with the bags loaded with my corporate clothes the bike didn’t have quick enough response for me. I was concerned that if I needed to get out of harm’s way quickly that I needed to add more power.”
And that’s why the first thing her brother did was bore out the engine. “Back in November, I was out riding with some new friends,” Paula said. “One approached me and asked, ‘That bike isn’t stock is it?’ And I replied, No, how’d you know?’ and the new friend replied, “because it doesn’t sound stock, you had that bike bored didn’t you?’ and with a sh*t eating grin on my face I simply replied ‘Yes.’ I have a 2-into-1 Python with the baffles removed for a reason. If people can’t see me they will HEAR me. I have been known to set off car alarms by accident.”
“I’ve added a lot of aftermarket parts for comfort and to improve the look of the bike. I still have a lot more add ons and improvements to do on my bike, she’s a work in progress,” Paula said. She loves the apes, but has a lot of favorites on her bike. “The apes rock and look bad a**,” she said. “The Mustang seat is the best and most comfortable seat out there that I know of. My forward controls are so comfy and positioned just perfectly for my petite little legs. I get a lot of compliments on my bike; the paintjob is gorgeous and the black matte mini apes and chrome from the forward controls back to the luggage rack — she’s just sharp looking, period.”
Paula grew up riding with her dad on his Harley and said there was no way she would ever ride anything other than a Harley. “Needless to say I got what I have dreamed and wanted,” she said. “At least my Dad was able to see me get my bike before he passed last February.” I asked Paula if anything on her bike gave her trouble, and she said she has a little problem with recurring oil loss. “I just have to get some minor adjustments done and it will all be cool. The most trouble, actually,” she said laughing, “was my ex-husband. I fought him tooth and nail for my Harley! He told me I was going to buy a Hyosung because a lady that he worked with had one, well she went out riding with another friend and with 46 miles on the speedo the bike broke down, she sent us an email with pics of her bike getting loaded onto a tow truck! Needless to say I kept the Harley, and got rid of my ex-husband.”
