A favorite stop is the small campground, gas, and inconvenience store just south of the Richardson Grove with massive Redwoods narrowing and darkening the road even in bright sunlight bought half way to Garberville. If ya run US101 from Piercy to Garberville you know the spot. It’s got the closest beer store to the venue. By the by, the gate people were stopping bikes with cases of beer on top of their other junk as it is not allowed to bring your own beer. The Kiwanis make a lot of their expenses through beer sales, so at least bury it in your saddle bags!
At party central at the Riverview Ranch in Piercy, run by the local Kiwanis Club on the Eel River, the partiers were in-charge of their own behavior and not constrained by the watchful eyes of the law. Thursday, people line up and camp by the front gate waiting for the 8am Friday gate opening, then the mad rush down the hill to grab a favorite spot. At 9am festivities start, continuing straight ‘til the music stops sometime after midnight Sunday morning. That’s it. The bands played, people drank to excess and crawled back to their campsites avoiding a possible DUI and all the assorted costs. The small vending area was managed by the MMA (Modified Motorcycle Association) who also handled the security as the event is on private property more efficiently than any cops.
As you drove into the venue you were eyed, not only by the cops but a couple of bottom feeding lawyers who rented prime spots for their drivel. There was food, booze, music, a wet T-shirt contest, a wheelie competition, and other assorted activities. The aroma of medical pot was heavy in the air for some 36-plus hours. Then it was over, and at the crack of dawn Sunday, the outward flow began, lasting a good part of the day.
Let’s hope that the Kiwanis of the Redwoods make enough to continue producing the Redwood Run. It would be a damn shame if this, one of the better events in my opinion, should end.
