Even with my advanced lack of observation and awareness of what’s going on around me, I’d never miss this bike or any of the other baggers Phil’s turned out over the years.
Maybe the joke’s on us, but this intensely worked over 2016 Harley-Davidson Road King shouts out Sons of Anarchy anywhere and everywhere you look and as I said, that’s far from stealthy. But for lovers of the show and there are many, many fans, this over-the-top tribute is right up their alley and they probably couldn’t be happier.
Flamboyant and stealthy are just about at the opposite ends of the spectrum when you define them. The bodywork Phil created for this build could best be described as a bit on the flamboyant side and that’s okay as today’s custom baggers are never intended to be anything but. The more outrageous the better seems to be the current bagger builders’ mantra and that’s what show goers expect. Phil doesn’t disappoint them in the least with flowing lines that have more in common with Bruce Wayne’s original Batmobile than the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter.
There’s a lot of skilled handiwork put into this build that might get lost in the SOA tribute aspect. Everything from killer audio to air suspension to an electric center stand (as well as a side stand) to a clean set of apes floating unobstructed by any bodywork all show he knows his audience well and gives them what they want. Toss in the completely re-thought single headlight nacelle that melds into the fork legs and you’ve got an attention-getter on that style point alone.
Although I doubt there’s a lot going on different inside the 2016 Twin Cam 103, there sure is a lot on the outside. Diamond Cut cylinders and heads in black set the tone for the engine’s look. Swapping out any and every engine cover for a contrast cut billet piece that mimics the look of the cylinders and heads ties it all together nicely. The old Stage 1 setup here does a lot to add its own bit of spice to the mix with a bastardly rorty 2-into1 exhaust and a high-flow air cleaner. A visual and aural delight as far as I’m concerned and punchy enough for a custom bagger too. A tasty and somewhat expensive change-out of parts, but worth it. Same goes for all the controls and floorboards too.
Where this Road King takes a big turn to the wild side is the front wheel. Now I know that big wheels on the front of a bagger isn’t something new, but the choice of the wheel on this bagger is something new. It’s so new and exclusive it’s patented and the company holding that patent for a 3D multi-piece (6) wheel that we common folk would call a spinner is Movement Products Inc. in Lake Forest, California. And, to add just a bit more exclusivity, this is a one-off Super Allure wheel designed in conjunction with Phil that brings the SOA to the bike in a big way. Those wide (and many) spokes allow for a lot of bold SOA graphics both in paint and machine work. Plus, remember it spins too and a wheel spinning like crazy on both sides at a stop always grabs anybody’s attention.
But that’s not all the SOA tribute going on, the whole bike became an air brushed storyboard of the characters of the show and die-hard fans might be able to pick out certain scenes, but I, a fan but not diehard, certainly can’t. Some discreet SAMCRO badges along with the fine leatherwork on the seat by Jeffrey Phipps Custom in West Palm Beach, Florida, brings out the last bit of SOA touches to the build. Mr. Phipps has done quite an epic job on the hand tooling on this elaborate SAMCRO design that’s laced together with obvious laces. Pretty cool stuff.
What Phil Cerulli has built is not only a tribute to the Sons of Anarchy show, but a tribute that all the fans of the show who were so devastated when it ended. I still run into a lot of people, not all obvious motorcycle riders, who still wear the SOA apparel proudly. I’ve only caught a couple of SOA-influenced Dynas on the street, but I’m sure there’s more to come. Every now and then I see somebody who has a real SOA something or other tattoo and that’s truly an adoring fan, but hey each to his own I guess. For you SOA diehards, just seeing a bike like this is sure to bring back memories of some favorite episode or character or whatever SOA moment you’ve got stuck in your head and that’s what it’s all about. But I’ll stick to my SOA-supplied guns and declare that Phil Cerulli and Stealth Cycles couldn’t make a stealth bike if he tried.
