For instance, just when every bagger freak is discussing the merits (or demerits) of using a 30-inch front wheel along comes the new bigger, bolder, and badder 32-inch front wheel and a whole new discussion begins.
All of this mechanical blather is why something that would now be overlooked, but is still custom as hell to my mind could be considered a conservative custom in today’s rush to insanity. Built by Steve Studstill of Bikers Dream in Atlanta, Georgia, it’s possibly the closest thing to a body-in-white NASCAR racer for a bagger. The ’05 Harley Road King called White Night features a now conservative 26-inch front wheel (that’s really hard to say with a straight face), a simple, yet striking white paintjob, and a hot rod motor from hell. Oh there are the other standard custom goodies like front and rear air ride suspension, killer sound system, custom, but not-so-custom bodywork that it loses its Motor Company silhouette. It looks custom bagger stylish, but not over–the-top outlandish.
Where Steve, service manager at Bikers Dream Atlanta, took a no-holds-bared approach and a full-speed-ahead command was to the Harley Twin Cam 110 engine with a hot-rod-to-hell powerhouse as the final result. Built by Gary Stroud Racing known for its engine building prowess from stockers to nitro-burning dragsters, Steve refers to the engine as a “big ass motor with big ass cams” and that makes for big ass horsepower. Now you could always argue that a pretty damn radical bagger doesn’t need big power, but don’t try and tell that to Steve. He’s got a wild streak in him that this Q-ship of a custom bagger doesn’t try and hide with its hairy–looking intake and exhaust that dominates the right side of the engine and to me, the bike, even in its black livery.
If you’ve gotten this far in the story, take a look at a couple of other completely different Steve Studstill-built customs we’ve previously featured on Barnett’s Magazine Online, click on Bottlecap Bobber or Hardcore Heaven. Steve is by no means a one-trick pony and he’s not afraid to tackle any custom category and kill it while he’s doing it.
