We arrived early during setup Saturday morning to get the best unobstructed shots as the motorcycles were being spotted and to see who was who and what was what. Windjammer guru Craig Vetter was there along with his wife Carol. Craig’s display was devoted to his current obsession with streamlining motorcycles for squeezing maximum miles out of a gallon of gasoline. Retired A.M.A Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill and three-time 500cc World Grand Prix Championship winner Wayne Rainey, both long time attendees, were hanging out and greeting fans. Even the legendary fabricator John Reed, owner of Uncle Bunt’s Chop Shop, was in attendance.
The $65 price of admission also includes a buffet-style BBQ prepared by The Quails’ gourmet chefs which is another great reason to attend The Quail Motorcycle Gathering. Shit, in my opinion there ain’t no reason not to attend. Unless of course you’re in jail or dead!
Some of the 70 MV Agustas that will be auctioned off in ONE LOT during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August were also on display. Ya want the lot? Bring mucho dinero plus some more! The major sponsors were Ducati North America, Breitling USA, and Corbin. Speaking of Ducatis, there sure were lots of ’em, but most exotic marques were well represented.
I want to thank The Quail’s event manager, Courtney Porras Ferrante, for smoothing the way for this disreputable personage to have access to everything I needed to access. Also a shout out to Audi’s new motorcycle brand, Ducati, for bringing their espresso machines like they do at Laguna Seca’s Ducati Island and Daytona Ducati to keep me jumping with six double shots of espresso during the day
