The logo for the Sackets Harbor Brewing Company is, “Sip a bit of history.” Sackets Harbor Brewing Company operates one of New York State’s oldest continuing microbreweries featuring both a working brewery and dining establishment. The brewery is located on West Main Street in the village of Sackets Harbor, NY, and situated on the shore of Lake Ontario. The brewery and brew pub occupy the former New York Central Railroad Station building, which retains most of its original detail. The dining room and outside deck boast generous views of the lake and sunsets. The five star restaurant offers fine dining and upscale pub fare that is paired with a rotating selection of over a dozen original craft beers brewed on-site including their multi-award winning Thousand Islands Pale Ale and War of 1812 Amber Ale.
The brewing company wanted an eye-catching mobile advertisement vehicle, but was not sure if it should be an auto or motorcycle. They settled for a British made motorcycle, an old Triumph. But bringing an old broke-down motorcycle back to life would take the mechanical knowledge and expertise of a couple bike builders who specialized in old English machines.
The Hartz Brothers (Josh & Rob Hartz) of Watertown, New York have been building and restoring old English motorcycles for many years. These guys have the skills and experience in reviving and putting life back into old machines, so they were the obvious choice for the brewing company. They assisted the company into mobilizing their advertisement, two-wheel Triumph motion to be exact, and their work was challenging.
They started out with a 1969 Triumph engine numbered 00100, which in Triumph terms means one of the first engines to come out of the factory in 1969. The engine had been sitting for a period of time after being rebuilt on a number of occasions over the years. “We completely tore down the engine and replaced all the seals and gaskets. We made sure that all the parts were good and clean. The parts that were damaged or severely worn were replaced, or machine built from scratch,” said Josh.
They then went with a six over hard tail, a stock 3.5 gallon “Slimline” Triumph gas tank, rebuilt Triumph front forks, and a whole new electrical system with a Boyer ignition. They added a custom tooled seat from Chuck Bates, Avon tires, polished aluminum rear fender, and a paint job by Jason Earhart of North Carolina.
Since the War of 1812 was between the Americans and the British, the Sackets Harbor Brewing Company wanted a theme on bike reflecting this war and the brewing company’s logos, so some fine, detailed airbrushing was necessary. The American flag was airbrushed on the right side of the gas tank, while the British flag was airbrushed on the life side. The “War of 1812 ALE” went on the right side of the oil tank, and “Sackets Harbor Brewing Co.” went on the left side of the oil tank. The overall outcome of the customizing project of this Triumph is simply astonishing.
The Hartz Brothers didn’t encounter any problems in the building and/or rebuilding process of this old Triumph…Probably because they enjoy what they do. The next time you are in northern New York be sure to visit the Sackets Harbor Brewing Company, and sip a bit of history, and enjoy a great meal.
