Okay, okay, I’ll explain what I’m vaguely trying to explain so far. Picking a bike to write about is not easy as Jack Cofano’s photo galleries that we use for online articles are beautifully extensive. The first two bikes that caught my eye to write about were two that Barnett’s Magazine Online had previously featured a year or two ago, but they’re still out and about on the show circuit so Jack caught ‘em in his viewfinder. New shots, new location, and constantly on the go, Jack doesn’t have time to mull over whether he shot them before. When Mr. Cofano is in show photo-mode, it’s more like an artistic hit-and-run.
As I scrolled down the page, the striking orange and black paint on Jason Beavers’ much-modified 2012 Harley-Davidson Road Glide grabbed my eyeballs and made me check it out in more detail. Something looked familiar, but I wasn’t sure exactly what, but then I saw it ─ the seat. That’s a seat you don’t forget.
Firing up the rest of my sleeping brain, I remembered seeing that seat or possibly one just like it (doubtful) on another Crazy Beavers bagger build. Then when the brain had reached full speed, it all came back. This orange and black bike was formerly a black and gold bagger that had made Jason a proud papa with many wins on the show circuit. Now, he had cleverly taken the tins or in this case, the glass, along with the engine covers and wheels, and shot them in a new paint scheme. Vuela! A whole new look freshens up a year-old build and it’s back on the circuit.
It’s not a big surprise to me that Jason decided to do a paint do-over as painting was what got him started in this whole Crazy Beavers Customs gig. He’s a talented lad to say the least. This time around he shows his mastery of the Old School acetylene smoke touch with controlled smoky flame graphics that I have no idea how he made the lazy black smoke do his bidding. Well, at least I’m assuming that’s what he did as doing acetylene smoke graphics with an airbrush this nice is beyond my comprehension. Most real Old School acetylene smoke graphics I’ve seen were charming in their randomness, but that’s not the case here. Jason must have the smartest torch in town like those astounding-trick trained dogs you see on TV.
Okay, okay, I know there are ways to airbrush smoke graphics, but I just like the idea that Jason’s some sort of Svengali of Smoke who can control random events. Either way, the whole color change has a shocking effect of color that didn’t come across as shocking in the old scheme. Ramping it up a bit was Jason’s decision to bring the color into the drive train where color did not exist before.
Even though the fairing looks like it’s headlight-free, it’s not. Sportbike-style headlights neatly integrated into the custom one-piece fairing are integrated even more with smoked lens covers. Flick the lights on and the now orange reflector shows through the black fairing in a kinda eerie way. No, you probably wouldn’t want to head down a twisty country road after dark, but damn does it look good on the show floor. Check out Jack’s other pics to see what I mean.
There’s all the other good custom bagger stuff there too like a 30-inch front wheel, front and rear air suspension, Glenndyne Design’s massive brakes, the usual mild engine hop up stuff, and of course, a kick ass audio system that has a fairing-mounted iPad as its master of ceremonies. One thing that does stand out on this build is the total number of body parts. There are only four of them ─ the one-piece fairing, the front fender, the chin spoiler, and the most amazing one of all, the one-piece gas tank/seat base/bags/rear fender setup. I’ll assume that last item might require some help to remove as the end result is quite physically large. But, that’s the cost of being smooth. And if you can’t tell it by now, smooth should be Jason Beavers’ middle name although there might be a few repercussions from that.
