Owner and fabricator Chris Shoemaker, along with master fabricator Billy Greene, came up with the idea for the Legend over a couple of beers and wanted to build a bike a little different from the usual sleek modern creations they are noted for. Basically an old school styled chopper, it also has all the bells and whistles featured on all their bikes. The ape hangers, seat, sissy bar, and air cleaner are unmistakably “Wicked.” Their digital speedos are built into the gas tank for a smooth, unusual look. The ape hangers on the Legend are high, but swept back and designed so that even the vertically challenged biker, like me, can comfortably reach them. Also catching my attention was the unique sissy bar made from a chain supplied by the world famous motorcycle parts store…Lowe’s hardware, and fabricated in the true Wicked style.
The Legend is powered by a RevTech 100 inch engine with panhead covers to supply reliability along with an old school flair. A great new addition to the Wicked line is the Grandeur Super Auto Clutch. Using a centrifugal pressure plate instead of springs, this baby makes riding in stop and go traffic a piece of cake. I only wish my old Sporty had one, I probably wouldn’t have carpel tunnel in my left hand.
Wicked Choppers is a Certified Motorcycle Manufacturer which means their bikes are easy to finance and insure. So if you happen to visit Myrtle Beach, be sure to stop in their new showroom on the17 Bypass and check out their bikes, along with the awesome Wicked clothing line. Up Close: Hawg Halters Custom Brakes
Here’s a product you might not notice all the time since Hawg Halters offers, “the no logo look” on their line of performance brakes. Machined from aluminum in four piston or six piston models, these brakes are made inGeorgiaby a lifelong Harley enthusiast who originally made brakes for race cars. Now firmly into the motorcycle market, Mark Thompson of Hawg Halters offers a wide variety of brakes to fit stock Harley-Davidsons back to ’73 models and for custom bike applications. His products are available through the major distributors and dealer direct. They use a readily available set of brake pads that are widely distributed in the motorcycle market so you won’t be left high and dry somewhere if you need them. Mark is now branching out, manufacturing triple trees, forks, pulleys, and wheels. As a custom builder himself, Mark goes for a super clean look with his products, leaving his logo on the packaging, not the product.
Builder: Wicked Choppers
This is a great story. Owner Chris Shoemaker got into business more or less as the result of some poor service. In 2000, he had sold his business and was not yet started on any other ventures. He took his Fat Boy down to a shop to get modified. After three months, pretty much nothing had been done and he was getting anxious. He asked for permission to start fiddling with it himself and the shop let him use a lift. After a week, he had it taken down to small pieces for chroming, painting and powdercoating. After the bike was bolted together, Chris took it to Biketoberfest where it won a trophy at his first show. Encouraged, a ground up custom was started next which when finished was featured on the cover of Easyriders. The next year Wicked Choppers of Myrtle Beach, SC was born. Selling parts and accessories as well as providing service, the shop also continues making one off customs and now carries Big Dogs. You can check out Chris’ store online at www.wickedchoppers.com or you can see his bikes displayed at Laconia, Sturgis, Daytona, Myrtle Beach of course, Atlantic City, and at a number of Easyriders shows each year. He makes the rounds. He is now branching out with some proprietary products: grips, pegs, an internal handlebar clutch, and patented in tank instrument mounting. He can be reached at 843-294-2900.
