KIEHL’S since 1851
Story and Photos by Rodent
A drugstore purveyor of potions and lotions is the most unlikely location for a vintage motorcycle display. A few years ago, I noticed a restored Harley in a Kiehl’s location in Vancouver, BC and I thought it was pretty neat if not out of place in a women’s lotion & potion store. I understand now that the owners are vintage motorcycle nuts so that explains the why. Hugh Mackie of Sixth Street Specials turned me on to their flagship store on 3rd Ave between 12th & 13th St. in Manhattan, so I meandered over to take a look. There were the fashionistas shopping going up and down the aisles, maneuvering around vintage Harleys and Indians.
I get directed to their executive offices down in the West Village, so I wander down there to see what I can see. The receptionist don’t want to let me talk to anybody, much like Donna not letting anybody talk to Sherman or Mark. But I’m insistent and I get to Rob Imig, a vice president of public relations. It turns out that he bought Mike Corbin’s Steve McQueen Indian at the Legend show in Half Moon Bay, drank with Jeff Decker, knows Timothy White so on parting he said, “Let’s keep in touch.” So much for the receptionist’s attempt at blocking the Rodent in his quest for a story.
