About 230 antique and classic motorcycles went under the hammer at The Imperial Palace on the Las Vegas Strip. The Imperial Palace is no virgin to the classic vehicle business as they have an extensive display of classic cars on the fifth level of their parking garage, the site of the Bonhams auction. One large exhibition room has been cleared out of cages to make room for the auction. Thanks to Ray and Rob of The Auto Collections, the company that owns the Auto Museum has cars on display in California and 100 cars were shipped to the Shanghai Auto Museum in Anting, China, for display.
With previews on January 5 and auction the next day, it was busy. Lots to look at among the crowd of lookiloos. Thanks to Nick Smith, Bonhams Los Angeles representative, our entry to the event problems like so many other venues did not exist. Thank you, Nick! You were a great help, also Rob Williams, and Ray Thomson assured in getting this unworthy personage backstage during setup so I could shoot undisturbed by lookieloos. Some fantastic bikes for sale. I shot a Brough-Superior with its gas tank removed; first time I ever saw a naked Brough. Then the owner showed up with the gas tank and did some final touches to make it ready for auction. The sale was a record setting event in the amount of bikes sold and record setting prices. Bonhams always has a high quality auction no matter where it is: Las Vegas, Carmel, or Pebble Beach.
