One of these builders is Fred “Krugger” Bertrand of Basse-Bodeux, Belgium. He entered the custom bike building profession in June of 2002, and has built custom machines that were sought after and acquired by some high-profile folks, including an American movie star. All of his machines have received high recognition at custom bike shows around the world.
Fred’s shop is a one man operation comprised of his garage, which is mainly used for bike storage, and an additional room where the actual bike building and customizing is done. Both rooms are attached to the family home where Fred resides with his lovely wife Nathalie and their two children, Margaux and Maxence. “I changed my profession so I could spend more time with my family. My shop is part of our house, so I never have to leave home when I go to work,” said Fred.
“CAD-22” is Fred’s most recent project. It was shown in the 2005 Paris Kustom Bike show and took second place in the streetfighter category. When the winners were announced, you could hear a needle fall on a stack of cotton because the crowd was shocked and felt that “CAD-22” should have taken first place in its category. But Fred is a good competitor and was satisfied with the overall results.
The main idea and design is from Mark Duckman, and Fred is the power behind bringing the “CAD-22” to reality. The bike has a lot of ground clearance, which enhances its handling. The rear shock system is a stock H-D Softail model, so it provides a comfortable ride. In fabricating this custom, Fred used a 1994 H-D EVO Engine with a 580 Andrews cam, JIMs pushrods, Mikuni carburetor, Dyna ignition, and a specially designed Krugger stainless steel exhaust system.
The small dual headlights are H2 models, and the Krugger gas tank provides an almost clear overhead view of the rear cylinder. The unique split single seat makes it obvious that this custom is designed to transport only one rider.
