The result is the sleek eye-catching machine on these pages, the first solo effort of this young builder from Winston, North Carolina. With skills acquired from working in his family’s body shop to later working for the likes of Kendall Johnson and NASCAR’s Robby Gordon, Casey was ready break out on his own. The Goobers 52 bike seemed like the perfect opportunity to take his own concepts and turn them from pipe dreams to reality. “Plus, I got tired of somebody else getting all the credit, so I finally did my own thing,” says Casey.
Built on a Carolina Custom Products frame with a 6” stretch that at the time was still just a prototype Casey managed to get his hands on, Goobers 52 sits long and low. The clean 2’’over inverted fork by American Suspension hangs 42 degrees from horizontal and compliments the Legend Air Ride rear suspension for a comfy ride on Mount Airy’s back roads. Tri-spoke one-off wheels by Carolina Custom Products are elegantly engraved and pack a fat 300 tire out back and a Barney Fife-skinny 21” in front. The 124” S&S engine makes lovely music through its Cycle Exchange exhaust while spinning the Primo primary with ease. A Baker RSD 6-speed joins the Conga line and chain drive steps up next followed by the intoxicating smell of burning rubber. HHI brakes keep everything in line when that big S&S mill gets out of line while the Accutronix foot and hand controls, mounted on CMAC bars, manipulate the stop and go action. A Headwinds headlight and Hitech taillight make a run for “last call” possible.
Casey took an unusual tack on the tank by tunneling a series of graduated holes through it, allowing light to seep through and create a look normally seen in sophisticated architecture. “I was going to use that whole sheet-metal-with-holes idea on a bike of my own, but I went ahead and did it because I didn’t know if I’d ever build another one,” said Casey. The CMAC oil tank and fenders were stylishly integrated and compliment the swooping tank.
David planned to unveil the bike at his restaurant during a local HOG Rally and Goobers 52 was still in need of paint. Adding pressure was the fact that master builder, Eddie Trotta, planned to be there for the showing. Casey’s brother Chad, owner of Copperhead Graphics, stepped up to the plate and in two days pulled off the awesome paint and graphics. The six-month build came right up to the final hours. Casey says there were days when he worked 48 hours straight, taking naps here and there to keep going. The killer hours paid off though, and the bike was unveiled on time.
Remember Casey’s fear of using his ideas on this bike because he wasn’t sure if he’d ever get the chance to build another? As it turns out, that fear is unfounded as David is in the process of ordering up similar bikes for each of the nation-wide franchises he’s just inked. It’s easy to see why.
Builder: Casey McCreary, Casey Mac Customs
This bright new builder from Winston Salem, North Carolina, seemed to be born to build. He started his training as a youngster learning metal fabrication in his family’s body shop. A few years after, while his brotherChadwas painting bikes for Kendall Johnson during the Camel Roadhouse series, Casey showed up atKendall’s shop one Saturday and asked if he could help out. He ended up staying for a whole year learning everything he could from one of the best. From there he spent some time with Carolina Customs, and then left to pursue his lifelong dream and started fabricating for Robbie Gordon’s NASCAR team. But as dreams sometimes turn out, it wasn’t his cup of tea.
