Fred “Krugger” Bertrand’s SpeedBowl is a splendid example of mixing an old style boardtracker with modern technology. This old style scooter was handcrafted from the ground up. The frame, front forks, and most other parts were designed and fabricated exclusively by Krugger Motorcycles.
The front forks are oval tapered and reinforced with multiple layers of metal. The spring and suspension system is built inside the steering neck.
The frame is super solid and can easily carry a 300 pound rider. A portion of the frame also serves as the 3.2 liter oil tank. The long 10 liter double-sided gas tank was crafted from scratch. The small 12-volt scooter battery is neatly hidden behind the right side of the gas tank, close to the steering neck, and the regulator is hidden behind the left side. One small taillight is mounted on each side of the top rear portion of the frame, and the single headlight is mounted on the lower left front side. The leather bicycle style seat is superbly handcrafted in a light brown color just a shade lighter than the bike’s hue.
Krugger also made the handlebars. The left grip is more than the traditional control and resting place for the rider’s left hand. It is also a hydraulic twist clutch. The right grip is the accelerator. The bars can be raised or lowered and adjusted to fit the rider’s desires.
The engine is a RevTech Pandemonium 88” with S&S pistons, Andrews valves, STD heads, Jims pushrods, an Andrews 470 cam, and an S&S Super E carburetor. The transmission is 4-speed RevTech model and the primary and secondary drives are both chain.
The tires and rims are unusual in size. The front and rear tires are 23 inch and specially manufactured in Bangkok by a firm known as Vee Rubber. Krugger did the rims.
The SpeedBowl is a unique modern day custom that attracts lots of attention, especially that of judges at bike shows. The bike recently took first place in the overall freestyle category at the 2005 Paris Custom Bike show. This first place title earned Fred a three foot high gold trophy, a new RevTech engine, and an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas to compete in the 2005 World Championship in November.
Currently, Fred “Krugger” Bertrand builds approximately three bikes per year. His shop is located in Basse-Bodeux, Belgium, a town with a population of about 450. For more information on Fred “Krugger” Bertrand and his unique style of custom motorcycles, log on to www.krugger.net.
