It was reported that 6,000 enthusiasts braved the perfect weather to attend. Among the many personalities in attendance were Billy Lane, Eric Buell, Peter Coyote, Chad McQueen, Peter Fonda, Charlie Boorman, Timothy White, Bud Ekins, Mert Lawill, and Willie G., Nancy, and Karen Davidson. Willie G. was there not only to enjoy the motorcycles, but to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award which is a given each year to a person who has made an invaluable contribution to motorcycling.
The Legend of the Motorcycle Concours d’Elegance is the best motorcycle show I’ve ever covered.
If you’re looking for wet T-shirt contests or macaroni wrestling at the Legend’s event, you’ve come to the wrong place. That doesn’t mean there’s not a lot to do besides just gawk at some 300 of the most significant motorcycles ever built, in a setting to die for. There’s a cigar and spirits lounge where you can smoke a complimentary Cohiba cigar and sip Hennessy cognac while gazing at motorcycling memorabilia. You can attend a charity auction and raffle and watch the rich and famous buy cool bike knick-knacks. There’s a tour of fifty classic cars that stops by the Legends for even more motorized delights with vehicles by Rolls-Royce, Duesenberg, Ferrari, Packard, Aston Martin, and more. On Sunday, you might tag along on a 44-mile coastal tour with the entrants of the Legend’s show ending with a brunch at the Ritz. The sound alone is killer. Speaking of tours, if you’re really crafty you might try to sneak along on the invitational celebrity ride, which starts in LA and ends at the show. Just act real hip, nobody will catch on.
