Non V-Twins
Possibly the best part of this whole deal for me was that Adam’s answers to my questions were so to the point, I thought I’d just do something a bit different and let the man himself tell it like it is without me jibber-jabbering away about squat. Hey, check it out for yourself below if you don’t believe me.
What is the primary object of your business?
I started O Malley s Speed N Kustom in 2011 initially as a parts supplier. I was buying and selling parts, but got bored with just flipping items. In the bicycle and moped scene, I noticed there was a demand and a lack of accessibility to mean hot rod parts. The mean, raw, nasty, rusty, and dirty ─ that’s me to the bone. So I wanted to bring some badass parts to market. I developed a girder fork for bicycles and mopeds in January 2013. I make a lot of one-of items as well, such as brass knuckle gear shifters, suicide rear brake shifters, and handlebars. I market O’Malleys predominately as a parts company, Jesse McCauley is my parts guy, but I do full builds from time to time.
What led you to building the bikes and mopeds you do?
I have a lot of loves in my life. I love my wife, and my two kids. And, I love hot rods, rat rods, rust, villains/ bad guys, Halloween, laughing at people falling down, etc. I build from what’s inside of me, with the help of AC/DC blasting! I don’t draw. I let the essence of the bike design itself. I started out a car nut. I drool over a ’49 Mercury! I love an all- torque, straight six Nova so that’s ultimately why I do what I do. Bicycles and mopeds are hot rods too.
Do you do all your work in-house or farm anything out?
I make everything I’m physically capable of doing. I have actually just got into blacksmithing so I can get close to limitless. Please don’t take that as arrogant. It’s a promise of good quality and attention to detail.
Who is your customer?
I have shipped to customers in Australia, Netherlands, Germany, and, of course, the USA. As long as they’re willing to pay shipping, I’ll ship anywhere. Anywhere and everywhere!
Do you customize mopeds as well?
I really dig mopeds. The moped scene is huge, and is continuously growing. I’m actually building a Minarelli V1 moped to compete in an invitation-only motorcycle competition in January 2014. I have been spending a lot of time at my buddy’s, Shawn Lukitsch, shop, Shred Shed East in Richmond, Virginia, laying low, building bikes and learning as much as I can. I have some great new products for mopeds I’m about to unveil too.
Are you selling parts or just complete bikes?
I try to do it all. I have parts available for those with frames and need the accoutrement, and I build full bikes for those that want a dirty hot rod. O’Malley’s is a one-stop kustom shoppe.
Do you build spec bikes to sell or are they built on commission?
Both. Everything has a price so I always have bikes for sale. When building a bike, I ask a few qualifying questions to get to know the customer. Then I build them something based on that. I prefer to have full range of design because half-way through the build, it might need something, or look better without something. I’m a perfectionist, and an asshole. Sorry, “Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, but you’ll love it” should be my tag line.
How do you decide what you’re going to build and what is the process you go through to complete a build?
I have a few specifics that I feel are important in any build. It will have rust. It will have a killer set of forks. It will be mean. Everything else is based on the customer’s personality.
How do motorcyclists react to your work? Do you show stuff at m/c events?
For bicycles ─ A third thinks its super cool, a third doesn’t want to be caught looking at it (those I don’t care for), and a third thinks I should mount a weed eater motor on it to make it “cool.” Mopeds are cool everywhere! We took over hosting duties of the mini- bike race at The Horse Magazine’s Smoke Out Rally this year and really got the chance to put our stuff out there. Feedback was really good. However, I don’t build for everybody. I build for hot rodders. No matter the scene, the real people know cool can’t be faked. Either it’s cool or it’s not.
Where do you and your business go from here?
Sky’s the limit. I’m a big picture guy. I aim for the sky and am happy if I only hit the trees. I’m taking the rest of the year off to work on new product development and plan on killing it in 2014! I’m on all the social medias ─ Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and www.omalleysspeednkustom.com.
