Silent Scream started out life as a stock V-Rod, but the owner, Ferry de Kok, wanted something really extreme and totally outrageous. His only customizing instructions were, “I want a bike with a fat rear tire, something really special for a front end, and incorporating a few ideas I like from some of your previous custom V-Rods.” With those simple instructions as a guideline, Piet had a lot of latitude to create a wild V-Rod that he knew would please its owner and also be interesting for him to build, too. “I try and get inside my customers’ heads and understand what they are really thinking and what they want and expect in a custom motorcycle. The moment they enter my shop I watch their emotions. I observe how they look at some of my custom bikes on display and when they speak, I listen to every word they say,” said Hofman. Violator Customs was able to fulfill all of his dreams and Ferry ended up with a bike far beyond his expectations, he just loves his new custom.
One look at that fat 300mm Avon rear tire on a Rick’s “Skull Design” wheel, and it’s easy to see that the first “required” design element is in place and ready to rip. The rear wheel’s design is mirrored at the front and separates the clean, black Violator/OMP fork tubes mounted into smooth, thick triple-trees. Second design directive achieved. Topping off that front end is a set of Violator Antler bars, requiring the rider to lean forward to the rather surprisingly comfortable, low bars. Relocated OMP foot controls cut out the long stretch for shorter riders, always a V-Rod gripe. Making this ride even more comfortable are the Legend Air shocks working on the Violator/Rick’s custom swingarm. Calling all this fun to a halt are the massive Violator front brakes with an OMP setup on the rear. Design objective number three was accomplished with great details like flush mounting the speedo assembly into the center of the faux tank, mimicking the design of Harley’s big twin tank mounted gauges. This is an exclusive feature, which eliminates the stock high gauge perch and really adds to the long, low look of the bike. Bodywork is kept simple with tire hugging, short Violator fenders front and rear. Usefull bar end turn signals make it street legal and clean. Design objective number three completed.
Paint can make or break a bike and reaching a conclusion on the final color and design was somewhat challenging. “I originally wanted a two-tone black color with a little red included, but it didn’t compliment the original frame color, which I didn’t want to change. After lengthy discussions with Piet, I gave in and told him to do what he thought best,” said de Kok. The simple anthracite color overlaid with racing style stripes does just that, blending nicely with the frame and letting the flowing lines of the bike stand out.
One of the more interesting parts of this build was that Hofman has become quite proficient with the V-Rod customizing process, as it took him just three weeks to completely finish the Silent Scream project. Helping to finish this project quickly was that the stock drive train didn’t need any modifications as is it came out of the box, it’s plenty strong as is. I do think the name, Silent Scream, may be a misnomer with those shorty Violator pipes, though.
As the Motor Company continues increasing production and creating new models, first time Harley owners like Ferry will find it increasingly difficult to resist the Harley fever. Sooner or later they will be visiting their local Harley dealership. Ferry’s wife, Corrina, and their daughter, Vivian, are excited about their latest two-wheeler. But not as much as their son, Alan, who is aggressively bonding with the passenger position on this new bike.
Violator Customs was able to fulfill all of Ferry’s dreams and he ended up with a bike far beyond his expectations, one that can compete and win in any major bike show. But, Ferry has no plans to let his new custom V-Rod sit for an entire weekend just to show it off, you’ll have to catch a glimpse of the Silent Scream while out on the road.
